Founded in 1997, Midtown Academy is the eldest charter school in Baltimore. As a MICA neighborhood, we got a chance to propose the new identity for them. From our interview with students and faculty, they wished the new design could represent the Midtown Academy as a forward-thinking and community-based school.
To create a bold and modern identity, we avoided the conventional approach like a school badge or mascot, but only use a customize typeface. The Midtown typeface was created with an intention to reflect the school's robust culture. It featured a bold, condensed look with rounded terminals. The blocky typesetting showed the spirit of their building community. A vibrant 9-color palette was chosen to represent the diversity of the community.
